On October 4, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 616 into law. Effective January 1, 2024, this bill modifies California’s existing paid sick leave law, increasing the amount of mandatory paid sick leave time to which employees are entitled from 3 days (or24 hours) to 5 days (or 40 hours).
Here are some of the key upcoming changes:
- California employers must provide employees with 5 days (or40 hours) of paid sick leave
- The annual use cap has increased from 24 to 40 hours
- The accrual cap has increased from 48 to 80 hours
